BIBLE VERSES COLOR-KEYED FOR SPECIFIC ISSUES OR INDIVIDUALS

This information comes from Evangelism III International materials, from Leroy Gager's Handbook for Soul Winners (Zondervan, 1956), from suggestions by Dr. Dale Linebaugh, and from personal Bible study. The verses for Roman Catholics are from Part V, chapter 8 of Gager's book, and were compiled by the chapter's author, John Ingram. Verses with an asterisk are from Gager's book. The verse number or the entire verse can be highlighted in the suggested color in a Bible used for witnessing. These colors save time in locating verses, focus attention on the verse for the one reading, and suggest other verses of the same theme. Because a gift makes way (Prov. 18:16), giving a free New Testament is wise. If there is a Gospel presentation in the NT that you give, bend back the corner of that page, or mention the page number. Judging from the response, you can lead into the Gospel, reading from their new Bible, and bending back the page corners of important scriptures. Currently we use the English Standard Version NT from Crossway.

Muslims—Turquoise

The Christian Bible contains thousands of prophesies, many of which have been fulfilled (Jer. 51:35-40; 49:17-18; Micah 5:2; Psalm 22:14-18; Isaiah 53:1-10). The Koran (Muslim holy book) does not contain prophecies.

In the Quran Muslims are told to observe the Gospel (Sura 5:46; 5:68; 6:114). Muslims are told to have faith in the Scriptures formerly revealed in the Bible (Sura 4:136).

Salvation: Good deeds lead to Paradise, 4:173; 5:69, "do what is right...nothing to fear"--7:8-9; 21:47; 43:70-72. Muslims believe that males are basically good. Paradise is very sensual: 43:70-72.

Allah ("God") does not love the "treacherous or the sinful," 4:107. In general the Quran teaches that Allah does NOT have a personal relationship with his worshippers, so your experience of God's love is very important (Rev. 12:11).

The Quran teaches that there should be no compulsion in religion (2:256), but allows "Jihad", or a holy war to kill those with other gods (9:3,5; 47:5).

Jesus is one with God, and God is One— Mark 12:29; John 10:30; 20:28; 1 Cor. 8:4. Christians do not worship three Gods, but One God. God is a tri-unity.

Jesus claimed to be God, not just a prophet: John 10:30; 14:6, and performed many miracles (see the Gospels), as did the Apostles (Acts 2:43; 5:12). The resurrection of Jesus confirmed his deity (Acts 17:31).

In the Quran, Jesus is virgin-born (Sura 3:47; 19:16-22); had the Spirit, 2:87; was a prophet (2:137; 4:152--Muslims are told not to discriminate against Him as a prophet); and is the Messiah 4:172 ff. However, the Quran claims that Jesus was not God's son (4:172; 19:34-35; 43:82-83); and that He was not crucified, 4:158.

Jesus is sinless (1 Peter 2:22; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 4:15; 7:21; 1 John 3:5). The Quran shows that Jesus was pure (19:19). However, Muhammad committed sins (4:106; 9:43; 40:55; 47:19; 48:1-2 -- See Answering Islam)

Roman Catholics—Blue

(Of course, there are many wonderfully saved Catholics. It appears that some Catholics find the concept of salvation–by–faith–alone difficult to discern within their church's teachings. Certainly, a faith that saves will be accompanied by good works [1 Pet. 2:24]. Catholics who are trusting in good works for salvation have often been exposed to much Christian doctrine, and are often among those most prepared to receive the Gospel.) Mt. 12:32 and 1 John 5:16--there are degrees of sin; Mt. 15:7-9, 13*; Mark 7:9, 13*; John 3:18; Acts 17:2*, 11-12*; Rom. 8:1*; 1 Cor. 3:11*; Gal. 4:10-11; Eph. 2:19-20*; Col. 2:8, 16-23*; 1 Tim. 2:5*; Heb. 4:16*, 9:22*, 27-28*; 10:10-18*; 1 Pet. 2:5, 9*; 1 John 1:9*; 2:20, 27*
